A good read
Our Green Heart – The Soul and Science of Forests by Diana Beresford-Kroeger
Naturalist Diana Beresford-Kroeger weaves together her spiritual reverence and training as a botanist, biochemist and biologist in this book about trees, forests and biodiversity. Born in Ireland and a long-time resident of eastern Ontario, Beresford-Kroeger says she has “learned to speak the chemical and spiritual languages of nature.” NCC supporters will find scientific insights and anecdotes on each of the almost 200 pages in this book. From lessons on the anatomy of oak trees to the chemistry of forest bathing, Our Green Heart is a gem for people in awe of nature. The writing is clear and memorable. Beresford-Kroeger also narrates the audio book edition, where her Irish lilt makes for a pleasant addition.

L’Arbre monde (English:The Overstory) by Richard Powers
The eco-fiction book The Overstory shows how a single tree can shape your destiny, awaken your awareness of nature and even provoke a revolt. Richard Powers’ 2019 Pulitzer Prize-winning story links the fates of nine protagonists to a giant redwood tree and the forest surrounding it. We learn how trees communicate and, if we are truly listening, can teach us many things, like history, the weather and the invisible. For some, the trees engender respect for the environment; for others they symbolize profit. It’s worth reading as a reminder that we’re nothing without nature.
