Remembering a proud Newfoundlander
An NCC volunteer since 2009, Rob Crosbie helped to conserve some of Atlantic Canada’s most treasured lands
NCC Ambassadors’ Circle members, volunteers and staff are remembering long-time Atlantic Region volunteer and champion of nature, Rob Crosbie. The chair of Crosbie Group Limited passed away on April 18, 2025, leaving behind a deep sense of loss and a proud legacy of conservation in Newfoundland and Labrador.
“Rob was very committed to NCC and such a kind and giving person. He will be so greatly missed,” says Faith Flemming, the region’s director of development and communications, who worked closely with Rob over most of his 16 years with NCC.
A passionate outdoorsperson and entrepreneur who led with integrity, compassion and vision, Rob leveraged his connections with businesses, government and communities to help NCC’s Atlantic team advance important land conservation work. Among many projects, he helped establish the Freshwater Bay Nature Reserve in 2019 with a donation of 98-hectares of land owned by the Crosbie Group Ltd.
Rob was also active in NCC’s work across western and central Newfoundland, including ongoing conservation efforts in the Humber Valley and Gander Lake areas.
“Nature is the backbone of our society. It’s just amazing and I think people need to take care of it,” Rob said in a video he created for NCC. “It’s fragile and it could disappear quickly if you’re not careful.”
Faith remembers “a gentle giant” who was very well respected by NCC staff and the community where he lived, worked and played. She tells the story of a conversation with Rob about the challenges faced by NCC’s stewardship team working in remote areas of the province.
“He made some calls and arranged for a helicopter and then stepped forward to help pay for the gas,” Faith says. “He’d give you the shirt off his back if he felt you really needed it.”
Rob remained an active member of the Atlantic Region Advisory Board right up until his death. “His dedication to NCC and love of community and nature had no limits,” says Faith.
“He so freely shared his joy and giving spirit with everyone around him. There was something so very contagious about that.”
NCC and the Crosbie Family are grateful for the many donations received in Rob’s memory. To remember Rob and celebrate his life, donate online or contact faith.flemming@natureconservancy.ca.
