Our Work

Strategic actions, outstanding achievements

The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) is the country’s unifying force for nature, delivering large-scale, permanent land conservation.

Established in 1962, NCC is a private charity that works alongside individuals, communities, businesses and governments to protect remarkable natural areas that provide habitat to precious flora and fauna.

NCC in Quebec

  • More than 550 square kilometres of NCC-protected land in the province;
  • Protected habitats for more than 200 at-risk plant and wildlife species;
  • Close to nine out of 10 Quebeckers live less than 100 kilometres from a site protected by NCC;
  • Accessible natural areas for visitors to explore;
  • Among the top 100 charities (source: Charity Intelligence); and
  • Over 100 partner organizations.

Three-part mission

Science — planning conservation

NCC uses scientific methods and expertise to identify habitats and species to be protected. Careful planning ensures the future of these conservation targets.

Tools like the Atlas of the Southern Laurentians and the Field Habitat Atlas provide valuable insight into conservation priorities across the region and guide action on the ground.

Securement — conservation in action

Through land securement, NCC protects natural sites that are assessed as conservation priorities. This work is made possible by an exceptional network of partners consisting of individuals, foundations, landowners, businesses, conservation groups, local communities and governments.

Through a partnership with the Government of Quebec, NCC is taking concrete action to intensify its efforts to conserve natural areas through the Accélérer la conservation dans le sud du Québec program.

Stewardship — investing in the future

The sites secured by NCC are conserved through activities such as species monitoring, trail development, trail maintenance, restoration of natural areas and activities aimed at raising awareness. An endowment fund ensures the long-term management of the properties.

To accelerate the conservation of natural areas connected by ecological corridors, the Quebec Ecological Corridors Initiative (QECI) was launched by  in 2017. Coordinated by NCC, this initiative is led by 10 organizations and supported by more than 100 experts and stakeholders, promoting a collaborative approach to land use planning in southern Quebec.
