Saskatchewan

The Nature Conservancy of Canada’s (NCC’s) first project in Saskatchewan was in 1982 — the conservation of  a quarter-section of native grassland in the Qu’Appelle Coulee. Since then, NCC has been working to conserve our remarkable natural areas.

Canada’s Prairie grasslands store billions of tonnes of carbon, help mitigate flooding and drought and purify our water. They’re essential to people and to iconic species like swift fox, ferruginous hawk and burrowing owl.

Spanning Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba, Prairie grasslands are among the world’s most endangered ecosystems. More than 80 per cent have already been lost, and the rest are disappearing fast. In the time it takes to watch your favourite TV show, 12 CFL-sized football fields will be gone. By the end of the day, it’s 260. Each year, 60,000 hectares — 100,000 football fields — are lost forever.

The Prairie Grasslands Action Plan

NCC is rallying communities to safeguard what remains. Our Prairie Grasslands Action Plan will conserve more than 500,000 hectares by 2030 — an area six times the size of Calgary and equal to what we risk losing without action.

This once-in-a-lifetime effort is built on partnership. NCC is working with local communities, livestock producers, grazing groups, Indigenous Peoples, governments and industry to ensure grasslands remain the foundation of thriving ecosystems and resilient communities.

This plan will help counter biodiversity loss and climate change. Your support will restore rare habitats, protect species at risk and improve air and water quality.

Join us in safeguarding one of the planet’s most endangered ecosystems. Visit prairiegrasslands.ca to learn more and take action now.
